About Addu City: the southernmost atoll

Addu, the southernmost atoll, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of 30 islands around a heart-shaped lagoon, with wetlands such as Eedhigali Kilhi, mangroves and freshwater lakes. It has the country’s second-largest population, its own dialect, Addu Bas, and a long history: Meedhoo was among the first islands to adopt Islam, and Gan was a Royal Air Force base whose airfield is now Gan International Airport. Drive the longest link road in the Maldives, dive with reef mantas year-round, and stay at Canareef or Equator Village.

Why it's on our list

  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
  • RAF history at Gan
  • Year-round mantas
